Overview
The Principles of Change is a weekly interdisciplinary seminar series that explores ideas in philosophy and science by combining instruction, reflection, and discussion into 2-hour sessions.
Historically, the most significant and transformative ideas emerged in lively forums—places where curious minds gathered to challenge, refine, and expand their understanding of the world.
In ancient Greece, symposia fostered debates that shaped the foundations of mathematics, democracy, and moral philosophy. In Roman forums, thinkers like Cicero and Marcus Aurelius shaped Stoic philosophy and the principles of common law. Across cultures—from Osaka’s Kaitokudō (懐徳堂) academies to Enlightenment-era salons—these communal discussions were central nodes of intellectual thought.
Today, it's rare to find spaces that encourage meaningful, sustained dialogue. We aspire to revive that tradition by forming a weekly interdisciplinary forum that covers topics from across economics, psychology, anthropology, physics, and philosophy.
A Community of Thoughtful Dialogue
Whether you're a lifelong learner or new to foundational and modern ideas in western thought, you'll find a welcoming environment here—one that prizes intellectual rigor, open-mindedness, and respectful debate.

Your Instructor
My name is Marius Marcelis, and I've been fortunate to explore many different fields. I studied philosophy at King’s College London and physics at Columbia University, taught Software Engineering at the University of Oregon, worked on a congressional campaign, and later founded a small consultancy. These experiences allow me to approach familiar debates and heuristics from fresh angles, tying together diverse threads of knowledge.
I've always been passionate about teaching and, over time, have developed an effective way to introduce complex topics from first principles. My overarching goal is to cultivate a vibrant community of thoughtful individuals who come together to explore, challenge, and grow—both intellectually and personally.
